During a crisp fall game against the Kentucky Wildcats way back in 1914, Cincinnati’s star fullback, Teddy Baehr (really!), inspired one cheerleader to improvise a surprisingly catchy chant: “They may be Wildcats, but we have a Baehr-cat on our side.” The raucous crowd followed, and by the next-day’s school newspaper, a cartoonist had immortalized the Baehr-cats for the ages. Only one minor edit: BEARcats. The rest is history.
